Please can you give me some pointers on the psychology of entertainment. The media is full of pop music, football matches, drama etc. Entertainment has huge appeal but it often has little to to with real life. People use it as a sort of escapism. I think that it is primarily a defense mechanism.
The explosion of pop music in the 1960s is often thought to be a displacement from the doom and gloom carried over from World War 2.
I am also interested on how therapeutic entertainment actually is. To me it is fine as far as it goes but by its nature it is always relatively superficial. For example, how helpful is it for an abuse victim to be a spectator of entertainment ? Isn't entertainment a sticking plaster based on the idea that if there is lots of jolly entertainment it will make everyone happy ? In reality there may be many people who are clinically depressed due to abuse who may not be getting appropriate treatment, and no amount of entertainment may help - in fact they might find it irritating.
