I will be graduating with a PhD in Social Psychology in Summer 2007. Before coming to the University of Michigan I worked with Dr. Michael Ross at the University of Waterloo and Dr. Anne Wilson (now at Wilfrid Laurier University) in Ontario, Canada. I am currently working with Dr. Norbert Schwarz and Dr. Brad Bushman. I have broad research interests, which often blur the lines between subdisciplines in Social Psychology.

Political Psychology

One area of research examines political psychology topics using social cognition theory and methods.

A. For example, my colleagues and I examine gender biases in the facial prominence of online pictures of politicians.

B. Another area of political research concerns the influence of exposure to politicians. Does seeing a media depiction of a political leader lead to changes in the perceived traits of unrelated others?

C. Finally, I am also interested in exploring the effect that exposure to positive group members (e.g. Martin Luther King) has on people’s attitudes toward specific group members (e.g. Colin Powell) versus the group as a whole (e.g. African-Americans).

The social cognition of narcissism (inflated self-esteem)

A. Perceptions of differences: We find that narcissists think of themselves in terms of their separateness and uniqueness from others (they have independent self-construals), and that this thinking extends to their cognitive style.

B. Perceptions of similarity: Making narcissists focus on a key similarity to another reduces their aggression after they are criticized.

C. Narcissism over time: Using a cross-temporal meta-analysis, we also find that narcissism has been rising in college students over time.

Re: reduced aggression study

Yeah, but did the Ns in the experimental group then go home and find someway to rationalize their superiority over their shared-fingerprint partner? :?
