Pregnancy and Narcissism

Postby ConcernedK10H » Thu Jan 29, 2009 8:05 pm

My mother in law is a SEVERE narcissist, and my husband and I have successfully kept her at bay in recent months. He has 3 sisters, and one of them seems to be a narcissist as well. She is 7 months pregnant, and continues to use alcohol and drugs (in secret) not realizing certain people are aware. Then in public places she is the picture of a perfect pregnancy. Refuses to eat steak unless cooked well done, won't eat sushi, talks about how she has continued to exercise, claims to only take whole food vitamins, etc. She has no job, is in college (21 year old FRESHMAN) and has dropped all but one of her classes (which we found out from another sibling) but continues to put on a front that she is working diligently at school. I have had a hard time finding any articles about pregnancy as it relates to narcissism and we are starting to worry about what may happen to this baby once she is here. Any direction you could give would be much appreciated.

The Narcissist as Liar and Con-man

Children, to me, are both mirrors and competitors. They reflect authentically my constant need for adulation and attention. Their grandiose fantasies of omnipotence and omniscience are crass caricatures of my internal world. The way they abuse others and mistreat them hits close to home. Their innocuous charm, their endless curiosity, their fount of energy, their sulking, nagging, boasting, bragging, lying, and manipulating are mutations of my own behaviour. I recognize my thwarted self in them. When they make their entrance, all attention is diverted. Their fantasies endear them to their listeners. Their vainglorious swagger often causes smiles. Their trite stupidities are invariably treated as pearls of wisdom. Their nagging is yielded to, their threats provoke to action, their needs accommodated urgently. I stand aside, an abandoned centre of attention, the dormant eye of an intellectual storm, all but ignored and neglected. I watch the child with envy, with rage, with wrath. I hate its effortless ability to defeat me.
