This week, a death of a toddler in my area has caused concern in the media about our local child protective services. This is the same child protective services that took complaints from me about d being in danger with the ExN -- and they never even investigated. This is the same child protective services that received a videotape of ExN sexually abusing N, brought d in for an interview and told me basically that while ExN's behavior on video was inappropriate, since d told social worker she liked daddy, they would not recommend case for prosecution. (Guess the social worker didn't know too much about psychological abuse...) Most old vets here know that I then took the matter to family law court. 18 months and several thousand dollars later, ExN's parenting time was finally suspended.
The toddler who recently died had a protective mother who also contacted protective services to say someone in daddy's home was physically abusing her d, but the agency did nothing. Finally, family law court took child away from bio/protective mother and several weeks later, stepmom is now accused of killing the child. There have been other cases recently in this area. I have come to realize that the only difference between me and most of these other protective moms was money. Not that I have much, but I had enough money to fight in family law court. These cases don't really even belong in family law court, they belong in criminal court! It makes me so angry, and guilty some too. Don't get me wrong, I am so happy that d is now safe. But I am so angry that "the system" doesn't work. I wanted to write a letter to every elected official in the area, but then I realized that I live in a small community and I would risk upsetting the same system that still would be involved if ExN found his way back into the legal system.
I'm so frustrated and I want to turn my anger into something positive, but I feel really stuck. I thought about volunteering as a court advocate for abused kids, but I think that might be a conflict of interest, at least til I know if ExN will claw his way back into d's life. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Oh, and to top things off, this week ExN also left a voicemail for d telling her that "so many people know of their situation and they are praying for both of them." I know he just wants to get a reaction but it's hard not to blow up when you hear this...

If I didn't know better, I'd think you were talking about a neighboring county to the one in which I live. I know of a very similar situation, and the frustration this family feels is horrible. They feel totally powerless and fearful for the child involved - a 3-year old. They have been able to get in touch with one of the local elected officials, who hopefully, will be able to step in. But, this is only through some contacts another family member had. So, like you, situations like this are very anger-provoking and frustrating. It's maddening.
