Narcissist and Testosterone

Postby sysxlv » Sun May 31, 2015 8:23 pm

My husband has been diagnosed with NPD after being in counseling for over 15 years. I'm not going to go into our 20+ years of marital history in this posting except to say that it has been long and sordid.

But this last year has been even harder and weirder, if possible. He has become more arrogant, more egotistical, more selfish, more social (and awkward while doing it) and more full of himself than before. He actually carries himself differently when he walks around or when entering a room. When we are together with anyone else, he doesn't stop talking the whole time. He knows everything. Has an opinion on everything, right or wrong. Comments on all of it or interrupts the person to finish their sentence or correct them. It seems he needs to be the center of all attention even though this has not been his MO in the past. He is not physically fit but has decided to partake in a small triathlon which has not helped his arrogance.

The only thing different this last year than previous years is that he started taking testosterone shots. Our medical doctor assured me that there were not negative consequences or long term health risks. I've done a ton of reading on the research regarding supplementing with testosterone but of course none of that is based on people with personality disorders. It is all research based on what is considered the norm or average.

What is your opinion on this? Should a narcissist take testosterone shots and could this add fuel to an already blazing fire? Now that he is "all in" with the shots, what are the chances of him being willing to quit and how do the counselor and I go about broaching the subject?

As you yourself note, there are no studies regarding testosterone and narcissism:

Though I must say: testosterone is known to enhance aggressive behaviors.
