Worried about Bullying in School?
Survey Reveals It's Much Worse in the Home!
As students return to school after the holidays, many parents are
concerned about their kids having to face their schoolyard bullies and
are demanding that the schools protect their children from bullies.
What parents are conveniently ignoring is that the bullying problem is
even worse at home. They are expecting schools to accomplish with
hundreds of kids what they, themselves, don't know how to do with only
a handful of kids.
Izzy Kalman, Nationally Certified School Psychologist, author and
expert on bullying, warns that parents who expect schools to protect
their children from bullying are engaging in wishful thinking. His
research has shown that bullying is a far more common problem right in
the home, and parents-even mental health professionals and
educators-don't know what to do about it!
Kalman asserts that anti-bullying laws requiring schools to protect
kids from each other are an unfair assault against schools. Thanks to
these laws, parents throughout the country are suing schools for
failing to make bullying stop, when the same experts who are supposed
to get kids to stop bullying each other in school don't even know how
to stop their own few kids from bullying each other at home!
To demonstrate the unfairness of school anti-bullying policies, Kalman
conducted a survey of about 4,000 mental health professionals and
educators who attended his seminar, Turning Bullies into Buddies. What
do the results reveal?
* Children of the professionals are four times more likely to be
physically hit daily by a sibling at home than by a student in school.
* They are twice as likely to be verbally ridiculed daily by a sibling
than a student.
* They are 50% more likely to go to the hospital from a fight with a
sibling than from a fight with a student.
Schools have been ordered to pay as much as $4.5 million in individual
bullying lawsuits. Kalman declares that if parents wish to sue schools
for failing to stop bullying among students, parents should be willing
to be sued for failing to stop their own children from bullying each
other at home. Once parents recognize their double standards, the
unreasonable onslaught against our schools should quickly end.
