The way I did it was to do a search by my state governmental agencies. For example, if I want to look for court records, I search (state name) Court System (because I know that's the name of the state department). Or you can do (whatever) Public Safety for state police records or (county/borough/city) Police. Do the same for Vital Statistics, etc. If you don't know the names of the various departments, most phone books have a list and many phone book directories are on the internet.

You will soon find out whether the information is available to the public.

Oh, also, I tried using one of those on-line services to find info about my ex. I found it to be a big waste of money. They can't report non-public information, so what you can find yourself is already there. The only info I got that I didn't get from my searches was prior residence addresses and 1 ex-wife I didn't know about. The previous residence addresses might be useful if you don't know where someone may have lived. Over all though, it wasn't very useful to me.

ok thx,

I wondered about all the criminal checks, and i see that you have to pay for them, i would get so far they said they had information in the database
but then you have to pay to get the information... and I thought well what if I pay all this money and it really doesn't tell you much

Canada is really really strict with privacy ... so i doubt that i would get any info in the first place

oh well it was worth a shot

ilovemusic, it is the same in UK, everything is kept private here. This country seems to bother more about the criminals than the victims. How on earth are we supposed to keep safe if we don't know where these guys are or what they have done in the past?

If I could have found out about xN before I dated him then it would have saved me all this heartache.............I would have run a mile.....in the OPPOSITE direction!

Dizzygirl, keep reading here, and learn to spot the N personality. That way you don't have to get mixed up with them in the first place.

I think the biggest deterrent to our own well being is that we have been taught to NOT trust our own instincts. If it smells like a rat, it probably is a rat. If you want to know a person's character, tell him something about yourself. If he seems bored or worse, jealous.... BIG red flag. Mention abuse to an N, and he will most likely side with the abuser. BIG red flag. Only the most learn-ed con men will tell you what you want to hear. Look for something in between, something sincere.

Again, trust your instincts.

Some criminal information, like sexusal offenders is on line in the US, but there are some LOOP HOLES even in that, that I recently found out about. So if they are in the process of moving from state to state or the state laws are different in each state they may be deleted from these sites until the new state "assesses" their level of risk which may take up to a year! for them to show back up on the list.

"Public records" (such as crime convictions) are accessable, but the big thing about that is that the criminal records are filed in the US by court/county/state depending on who prosecuted them for the crime. They may not be filed by name either, but may be by type of crime, or by date. Arrest records are not usually available to the public. Also credit records are unavailable now.

Real estate records are public info so you can find out who owns a particular piece of property. But again, you have to know where to search.

The on line back ground checks are WORTHLESS. save your money.

I did hire a professional licensed private detective and for $225 he gave me a list of convictions, list of all prior residences, SS# (actually 2) where and when it was issued, date of birth (which I knew already) List of all residences for 10-15 years, who owned the structure, value of structure, and all the people living in the "neighborhoood" of where he lived and their phone numbers. Since the majority of these were prisons or drug rehabs, they were not too helpful except to show what dates he was in prison or drug rehab.

I also had one run on my daughter-in-law who was an Internet bride that we know nothing of her back ground. I have not yet had time to start to call the neighbors and land lords to check up on her from the information I have gotten.

Published phone numbers are easily traced on the net, and osme programs actually will give you phone numbers of the neighbors around the person. I lost the address of a friend who moved and phone number,, but Iknew where he used to live and got the address of the old house, called the neighbors because Iknew his neighbor was his land lord, the man gave me the new address and phone number, so I found my friend.

Some places also can get access to drivers information. I noticed that when my husband died the photo on the news was from his drivers license. I am not sure how they got access to it, but some how they did. I also noticed that the photos on men being hunted are frequently from their DL photos (you can see the stamp imprint)

If you know the county too, you can access the personal proplerty assessment as well as real estate. I was able to go into the county assessors office here and find out the vin # and make and model and when a new automobille was assessed by my son and the Sexual predator I was watching for.

You can also get a forwarding address in US by sending a letter to the person's old address, and putting under your reply address "Forwarding Address requested" and they will give you the new address and return the envelope to you with the new address pasted over the old one.

If they have an incorporated business you can get information from that (some at least) from your state service that takes care of that in your state. Different states do different offices.

Usually birth and death certificates you have to be anext of kin or prove why you want it. But you can usually get some of that information. Also funerall homes are a good place to look for death records.

Probate records are public records, deeds, and some other records. School records are protected now, but year book entries are not protected.

YOu can get info on people who have licenses to carry concealed weapons, club memberships and that sort of thing too. the worst problem with t hese is that you need a "hint" at least of where to look.

Trash put out for pick up is legally now available for anyone to go through, but be careful that you do NOT use sany of that mail to do anything illegal because "Idenity theft" is a big bad crime now, even if it is not for personal gain. But it can give y ou some pointers to find legally availaable records.

Divorce records, hearings, etc. custody records, all are public iinfo. The testimony in some of them can be quite enlightening too. You might want to get copies of some of these records on your x if you know when where etc. they were done.

Sometimes hiring a professional todo some basic stuff for you, and then asking them how to go about enlarging this is a good idea, and willultimately save you time and effort and money in the end.

Just be sure that you do not do anything illegal in your searching. If you do it could lead to stalking charges and you dont' want that.

You can also use this information to help protect yourself if you are BEING stalked because you can see just how they can trace YOU even if you move and maintain NC. If you feel yourself in danger, you CAN "disappear" most places (with the help of the courts by changing your name etc) but it takes a lot of doing and trusting NO ONE to know where you are.

Oh, another thing, professional licenses are public records so you can check on those to, usually on the internet with the state licensing agency.

Hope some of this helps.
