I think they are too scared to Cookie.

I know I was. I mean, the thought of it. Accepting that there really is evil in the world. To believe in good you have to believe in evil and we don't want to do that.

People without conscious's? People who hurt others because they 'like' to? Who wants to believe in that? Not me. But my naivete' was lost by a first hand lesson in it. So was yours. So was everyone's here. We can't deny it anymore. But those who can will I would imagine.

I lost my best friend to XNP because he didn't want to believe in such evil. He chose denial over me. Told me that I was crazy too.

Cookie, did you see dateline tonight? It was another story about a con man who preyed upon vulnerable single Mothers. Certainly he was a P.It really is unreal how many of them there are out there.

I often come across sad examples of the powers of self-delusion that the narcissist provokes in his victims. It is what I call "malignant optimism". People refuse to believe that some questions are unsolvable, some diseases incurable, some disasters inevitable. They see a sign of hope in every fluctuation. They read meaning and patterns into every random occurrence, utterance, or slip. They are deceived by their own pressing need to believe in the ultimate victory of good over evil, health over sickness, order over disorder. Life appears otherwise so meaningless, so unjust and so arbitrary...

Cookie,

I just saw a rerun of Law and Order: SVU last night -- one that I sat on the couch and watched with the N before he left-- and they outright SAID their suspect was a narcissist, and showed how he was lying to four different women, one he was living with and three he met through "speed dating." They even said he's trying to heal his narcissistic wounds through the dating! Until he left and I started to read about Attachment Disorders which led me to Personality Disorders and then N/P, I would have never understood it, much less seen it in him. It just seemed like something so vague and "over there" you know? Something that happens to other people. Isn't that weird? Why is it that most people seem to have a general knowledge of what schizophrenia is, but their only idea of a psychopath is a Hannibal Lechter type person. (Which, by the way, the moving Hannibal Rising -- SO interesting!)

I love the TV show LOST, but two of the starring characters are con artists at the very least, though they try to paint them as having a heart and conscience. The episodes where they SHOWED the character Sawyer actively conning people were so educational!

Love Still

Because it is like most things in life, until it directly effects them, they just either don't care or don't believe that it is real....I knew psychopaths existed, but NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS could I have empathized or understood what victims of these predators dealt with in fall out until I experienced it myself. It's more like watching a movie about it rather than living it!

I guess I should add that my knowledge of psychopaths was limited to the serial killer type....that is a more accurate description.

Hello cookie

Yes it is interesting the fascination with this illness as entertainment, puts it way out there, but does not seem to impact people as to the reality of the situation,

Funny at first i thought good people are being exposed to the terms and now understand somewhat of the devastation involved

But denial is rampant, they cannot see these traits in some around them,

Personally i cannot watch these types of programs, they depress me beyond measure, i generally do not watch television,,

I believe the general public has an unhealthy optimism about evil,,,and a denial,,it serves to protect us,,from fear,,

thanks for this,,

I think it is because we dont take anything that seriously on tV , we see tv as a source of entertainment ( for the most part)

or we dont know what to believe even in the papers any more, we wonder how much of what we see on the news or newspapers are true

so we really dont take it that seriously, we see crime tv , turn the channel and then watch "the soprano's. and we can laugh because it is not real... unless we have a personal relationship with a N or a sociopath
we just dont take it sriously
